Stevenson Bill to Honor Mercer County Veterans with Highway Designation
Rep. Dick Stevenson (R-Mercer/Butler) has secured passage of legislation that would designate U.S. Route 62 in Mercer County as the Mercer County Veterans Highway.
House Bill 2030 unanimously passed the House today and now goes to the state Senate for consideration. If approved by that chamber and signed into law by the governor, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will be responsible for posting signs that note the designation.
“Pennsylvania consistently ranks in the top five or six states that has produced the greatest number of veterans, across recent wars and conflicts, and Mercer County is home to thousands of military men and women who served in all of our nation’s wars and conflicts, as well as during peacetime,” Stevenson said. “I am hopeful that once this highway receives this designation that everyone who travels this route in Mercer County will remember and recognize the valuable role local veterans have played to protect our democracy and our freedoms.”
During his remarks before the vote on the legislation, he acknowledged his deep appreciation to Wayne Stratos, a Mercer County Vietnam veteran, who presented Stevenson with the idea to name Route 62 in honor of local veterans. Stratos has dedicated much of his life to ensuring that the sacrifices of those who served are not forgotten.
The legislation was co-sponsored by fellow Mercer County legislators, Reps. Mark Longietti (D-Mercer) and Michele Brooks (R-Crawford/Mercer/Lawrence).
